Clarisonic Skin Care devices recalled

August 30, 2007

Pacific Bioscience Laboratories Inc. said that it’s recalling most of its Clarisonic Skin Care Brushes because of a risk that the device’s handle can overheat, possibly catching fire.

The Bellevue company said that no injuries have yet been reported from overheating incidents involving the motorized, handheld device that uses oscillating bristles to clean the skin.

Pacific Bioscience said it will replace all affected Clarisonic devices for free. The recall pertains to those made before July 2007; later, non-recalled models were sold in a box that read “new design, advanced engineering.”

Pacific Bioscience was formed by the inventors of the Sonicare toothbrush, which they sold seven years ago to Royal Philips Electronics.

Skin Care in Summer

August 10, 2007

Summer is often the season when people find it hard to care for their skin because of the heat and humidity, which turns skin oily and sweaty.

So many people think that not applying anything to the skin is the best way to prevent problems resulting from too much oil and sweat.

But this is a misconception. Actually, the skin is in desperate need of more intensive care.

The skin is being severely damaged by sun, salty seawater and a lack of sleep because of “tropical nights'’ to name a few reasons.

Despite such “challenges'’ for the skin, a simple approach makes a big difference in summer, especially for fatigued skin exposed to too much sun at beaches and mountains during your vacation.

Just like the efforts to seek nutritious foods to boost your physical metabolism, good nourishment is also the key treatment for the skin.

Nutritious products such as black raspberry widely known as “bokbunja,'’ ginseng and other summer fruits are popular to care the skin.

Instead of letting your stomach consume these foods, why not let the skin do the consumption?

Ginseng

From ancient times, ginseng has been highly appreciated as a plant good for health and vitality, and the enhancement of longevity and quality of life.

Even today, it has become one of the most favorable plants among many other medicinal plants.

Ginseng contains a variety of constituents that revitalize, regenerate and improve immunity, and qualities that are highly valued in skin care. So ginseng extract is the star ingredient in skin care products.

Many cosmetic products launch facial cleansing milk, ginseng tonic, lotion, and cream. Each formula is blended with quality pure plant oils and other genuine natural ingredients that activate and energize the skin.

Sansim produced by Hankook Cosmetics (50,000 won) contains the extracts of wild ginseng, or “sansam,'’ to provide nutrition ideally suited for sluggish, congested, devitalized and lackluster skin.

Also, Suhyangjin Boyang Keumyul Pack by the Face Shop (10,900 won) retains herbal ingredients including ginseng and nano-gold, which all function to moisturize the skin.

Fruit and Vegetables

Vitamins might be the most important nutrient for recovering energy because the skin tends to easily lose this through sweating.

Fruits and vegetables are abundant in various types of vitamins and are used in cosmetics to create excellent masks and lotions.

Both have a revitalizing, nourishing and often astringent effect on the skin. Masks give a soft peeling effect that removes dead skin cells, blackheads and excess pigmentation.

Vitamin A, called retinol, prevents the skin from wrinkling and keeps it revitalized.

Vitamin C and E protect the skin from ultraviolet rays, slow the aging process and make skin healthy and shiny.

Dry Skin Care and Eczema Treatment Tips: A Chemical-Free Lifestyle Does Wonders for Your Skin

August 2, 2007

The skin is not only the largest organ in the body, it’s the only one people other than surgeons get to look at. And, unfortunately, just like eyes are said to be the windows to the soul, the skin is the window to every internal organ and system. If something is not right inside, it doesn’t take long for the problem to manifest on the skin. Although there are dry skin care and eczema treatment products that actually protect the skin and allow damaged skin to heal, it’s important to know how to care for your skin from the inside if you want to minimize problems. Here’s how you do it.

The first step and most vital step is to stay away from harsh and harmful chemicals – of any sort. This includes chemicals in food, water, household cleansers, cosmetics, and even the environment. When you ingest or come into contact with too many toxic chemicals, the body gets overloaded with toxins. It can successfully process and get rid of some of them, but it has limits. When those limits are reached, the chemicals spread throughout the body and are eliminated through the skin. This causes dry skin, eczema and other skin problems that require special skin care treatment.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.

It’s not hard to figure out how to avoid chemicals in food, water, household cleansers and cosmetics: you simply buy products that don’t contain them. But avoiding environmental chemicals is a different story – they’re in the air, even inside the house. Even though the pollution index might be fairly good, what about the gaseous chemicals around the house? They come through the air conditioner and heater, they’re released from synthetic fibers in carpets, sofas and other furniture, they’re in the paint on the walls and the glue that adheres wallpaper.

I don’t want anyone to go into panic mode but, really, we’re surrounded. And it’s not helping our health, or our skin.

Dry skin care and eczema treatment begins with getting rid of all the harsh and toxic chemicals possible, and then protecting yourself from the rest. A good dry skin care product keeps out those chemicals so they do not cause skin problems, and are not absorbed through the skin to cause internal problems. Try a chemical-free lifestyle. It will help your skin, and your overall health.

Eight Great Tips for Natural Skin care

July 29, 2007

Skin is a very important and visible part of our body. It’s a kind of protective coating on our entire body parts.

As we care and look after our all organs, our skin requires a little more care as it’s directly in contact with the outer environment as dirt, dust and sun. Harmful chemicals, which our polluted air contains, and bad water too are a cause in damaging skin before time.

So one has to care about one’s skin well and should make a daily routine to pamper one’s skin to protect it from early aging and harmful skin disease.

Skin is affected by both the factors external and internal. External are direct contact with harmful UV RAYS, dirt and dust and internal is due to wrong food habits.

Your body is what you eat though it’s a lot determined by genes and one can have a bad skin due to hormonal imbalance in a particular age but eating all wrong food as all oily and spicy food can damage your skin. Which cannot be regained by external care only.

For a good easy skin care here are a few tips:

· First thing should be keeping your skin clean. Rather than using soaps on the face, its better to use mild face wash according to use skin type as oily for oily skin, dry for dry and combination for the combination one. One can use our home remedies for a beautiful, healthy and glowing skin. One can use rose water, lemon juice, and fruit juices to clean and wipe the skin with. It will give a refreshing look to one’s skin. If the skin is dry than one can use a pinch of milk cream and a drop of lemon juice on it, mixed and rubbed on the skin and then washed. Which is very good to clean the skin.

· Then is drinking lots of fluids. To have a good, healthy skin one should drink lots of water which is said to be at least 8-10 glasses of water in a day and some skin and health specialist say that it should be in proportion to your weight as for every 10 kg of weight, one should drink a liter of water so if the weight is 60 then the person should drink 6 liters of water. Which can be substituted with fruit juices too.

· Always apply sunscreen lotion on the skin. One should never go in the sun without applying a sunscreen lotion, which protects the skin from harmful UV rays. Which are known to give even skin cancer. It damages the skin and makes it tan, give blemishes, burn mask and pigmentation, which can never get healed 100%. So it’s better to apply the right sunscreen lotion on the skin to save the skin from early aging.

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.

· One should avoid all unhealthy food if the skin is already suffering from bad patches or pimples. Even caffine drinks are harmful for the skin. Too much consumption of tea, coffee, saturated drinks damage the skin. Smoking too is a very important factor to harm the skin. It makes the skin dry, makes it look dull and gives puffiness on the face. Drinking alcohol too isn’t good for the skin. So if one can’t stops consuming all these things completely, one can at least have them in moderation to help the skin stay young and healthy.

· Where one don’t get proper time to care the skin as full time working people, never mind, they can care their skin in a very well way by a little effort from there side. Working people should keep moist tissues in their bags and purses to wipe their face to remove dirt and sweat when they cannot wash their face again and again. Should apply sunscreen when outside home and nice mild moisturizer on the skin while doing anything else. Even in the night before going to bed one should wash the face, keep it clean, remove any make up if had put on the face and then should apply a good moisturizes according to the skin type.

· One can judge the skin type in the morning. As in the morning without washing the face one should wipe the face with a tissue paper, if there is lots of oil on the nose sides and chin then the skin is t-zone, if there is oil all over the face then the skin is oily, if its somewhere dry and somewhere oily then it’s combination skin, and if there is no oil n stickiness on the skin, the skin is dry and you are lucky if the skin is just perfect neither there is oil nor dryness.

· If the skin is prone to pimples and acne, one should give it a little more care. Should clean the skin more often, should apply medicated soaps and lotions. One should check it up with a skin specialist too as dandruff in the hair and scalp or some hormonal changes too can be a cause of a bad skin. One should never pinch or squeeze the pimples or acne or should not try to remove black head on their own as it will ruin the skin more and will give it permanent scars.

· One should avoid too much make up on the skin as if you care about your skin and keep it healthy and clean, you would definitely not require make up to make it look good. But if anytime you had applied make up on the skin, you should clean it as soon as you come back home. Let the skin breathe without any make up on it. One can use baby oil, baby lotion or mild cleansing milk on the skin to remove the traces of make up.

So one can get a glowing, healthy skin by giving it a little care and can keep the skin away from black heads, pimples, blemishes and pigmentation.

Better Births Feature Continuous Care For Moms, ‘Kangaroo’ Care For Kids

July 22, 2007

Women who have a midwife, doula or a supportive family member with them throughout labor are more likely to have a shorter labor, less likely to use painkillers during labor and more likely to be satisfied with their childbirth experience, compared to those who receive regular hospital care. In addition, women who practice “kangaroo care” — skin-to-skin snuggling with their newborns — directly after birth are more successful early on at breastfeeding, compared to births where the newborns are taken away to be swaddled or washed. The reviews appear in The Cochrane Library, a publication of The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research. Systematic reviews draw evidence-based conclusions about medical practice after considering both the content and quality of existing medical trials on a topic. Skin-to-skin contact and supportive labor care were the norm for centuries, before hospital births became the accepted practice in Western culture. However, “concerns about the consequent dehumanization of women’s birth experiences have led to calls for a return” to some of these practices, said Ellen Hodnett of the University of Toronto. Hodnett and colleagues reviewed 16 studies of 13,391 women that compared supportive one-on-one care with routine hospital care during labor. In the studies, supportive care included a variety of elements, from encouragement and massage to relaying a woman’s wishes to the attending medical staff. In general, the researchers found that supportive care worked best when it began in early labor and someone other than hospital staff provided it. The authors conclude, “Continuous support during labor should be the norm, rather than the exception.

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.” Early skin-to-skin contact between mother and newborn is another practice that has fallen by the wayside in hospital births. In skin-to-skin contact, the naked baby rests on the mother’s bare chest immediately after birth, taking advantage of what Elizabeth Moore, Ph.D., calls “a sensitive period for programming future behavior.” In 30 studies of 1,925 mother-infant pairs analyzed by Moore and colleagues, pairs who had early skin-to-skin contact were more likely to breastfeed and to breastfeed for longer than those who did not. The review also showed that babies who had kangaroo care immediately after birth “interacted more with their mothers, stayed warmer and cried less,” said Moore. The University of Toronto, Canada; the University of the Witwatersrand, Fort Hare University, and East Long Hospital Complex, South Africa; National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit and Warwick Clinical Trials Unit, UK; and Childbirth Connection in the United States supported the Hodnett study. Race in Medical Care: Skin Color Matters with Patient Care

July 21, 2007

The study, by the Disparities Solutions Center, affiliated with Harvard University and Masschusetts General Hospital, is the first to deal with unconscious racial bias and how it can lead to inferior care for African-American patients. It was published in the online edition of the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The doctors in the study were told two men, one white and one African-American, were each 50 years old and complained of chest pain. Each showed other symptoms of a heart attack.

The result was most of the doctors were more likely to prescribe a potentially life-saving, clot-busting treatment for the white patients than for the African-American patient.

“Physicians, like others in the U.S., in this country, demonstrated unconscious biases based on race,” said Massachusetts General Hospital chief researcher Alexander Green.

According to the study, those biases affected the treatment the doctors would have given the two patients.

The patients were not actually real people, but rather computer-generated images seen by the doctors only on a monitor.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online. This isn’t the first study to find that whites get better medical care than blacks.

National Medical Association president Dr. Albert Morris said it has been demonstrated multiple times in the past that whites receive better care and get care sooner than their African-American counterparts.

This study differs from previous ones because it is the first to demonstrate the reason for the difference really is racial bias.

After the doctors in the study evaluated the two simulated patients, they were then given a so-called implicit association test. The test is designed to reveal a person’s unconscious views of blacks and whites.

“If you scored high on the bias against African-Americans portion of the test, then you were actually less likely to provide clot-busting treatment for a heart attack for black patients,” Green said.

Clinically-Proven REVALESKIN Changes Face Of Skin Care

June 30, 2007

The battle to minimize fine lines, wrinkles and sun spots through non-invasive treatments just got easier with the launch of REVALESKIN.

REVALESKIN is the first and only professional line of skin care products exclusively formulated with CoffeeBerry, the most powerful naturally occurring antioxidant found today. With daily use, REVALESKIN has been clinically proven to improve overall skin fitness by enhancing skin tone, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as skin pigmentation from sun exposure and decreasing some signs of skin inflammation in as little as three weeks. Manufactured and marketed by Stiefel Laboratories, Inc., REVALESKIN is now available exclusively through the offices of aesthetic physicians nationwide.

“REVALESKIN can improve the skin’s appearance so quickly because its primary ingredient, CoffeeBerry, is abundant in four powerful polyphenol antioxidants which help prevent and reduce superficial damage from sun exposure and free radicals,” said Jim Hartman, senior vice president, U.S. sales and marketing, Stiefel Laboratories. “It’s having four polyphenols — chlorogenic acid, condensed proanthocyanidins, quinic acid and ferulic acid — that makes the CoffeeBerry even more potent than such robust antioxidants as green tea, pomegranates, blueberries, vitamin C and vitamin E.”

The REVALESKIN line is a convenient three-step system comprised of a day cream containing SPF 15 sunscreen, a night cream and a facial cleanser. The suggested pricing on the skin care line will range between $40 and $110.

Two studies were conducted, initially by David McDaniel, M.D. (director, Institute of Anti-Aging Research, Virginia Beach, Virginia) and then by Zoe Diana Draelos, M.D. (primary investigator, Dermatology Consulting Service, High Point, North Carolina) to test the validity of the ingredient CoffeeBerry. The results were statistically significant. The first study showed that the REVALESKIN regime improved the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without any adverse events or allergic reactions. Draelos reaffirmed McDaniel’s findings in her 12-week study with 50 females ages 30 to 50 mild to moderate photoaging.

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.

“During our study, we began to see improvement in skin texture after three weeks of application,” said Draelos. “After 12 weeks of use, there was a statistically significant improvement in overall skin appearance as characterized by better skin tone and increased skin brightness.

“Skin care should be considered part of daily health maintenance much like exercise, teeth brushing, and taking vitamins,” Draelos continued. “Skin is the largest body organ and represents what we present first to the world; it should be treated with the utmost care. Men and women need to do everything they can to protect and maintain skin health.” What Is the CoffeeBerry?

CoffeeBerry is the fruit of the coffee plant (coffea arabica) from which the commonly known coffee bean is derived. When harvested at a sub-ripe growth stage, the flesh of the fruit is at peak antioxidant concentration offering the extract CoffeeBerry that is comprised of chlorogenic acid, condensed proanthocyanidins, quinic acid and ferulicacid. Because of this potent composition, the CoffeeBerry dramatically outperforms even powerful antioxidants like green tea on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) scale by more than 1200 percent.

REVALESKIN is the first and only professional anti-aging line of skin care products exclusively formulated with the powerful natural antioxidant ingredient CoffeeBerry. The system includes a day cream with SPF 15 sunscreen, and a night cream, both with 1 percent CoffeeBerry, and a facial cleanser with 0.1 percent CoffeeBerry. REVALESKIN has been proven to be non-irritating and non-comedogenic as well as clinically, dermatologist — and allergy-tested.

GPs back NHS use of stop-smoking drug

June 21, 2007

GPs have welcomed recommen-dations for the smoking cessation drug varenicline (Champix) to be made available on the NHS.

A draft single technology ap-praisal issued by NICE last week advised that varenicline should normally be provided with counselling and support, but that GPs could give it to patients when these services were unavailable.

Varenicline was licensed by the European Medicines Agency last September.

Research has shown that the partial nicotine agonist is superior to bupropion (Zyban) or placebo.

Each 12-week course of the drug is estimated to cost £163.80.

Chairman of the General Practice Airways Group Dr Steve Holmes said: ‘It is pleasing that NICE has approved this drug. I believe PCTs will be able to fund it because it will be used instead of patches and Zyban.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.

It is also cost-effective, because NICE has found it is more effective, meaning patients would not need repeated courses.’

Smoking will be banned in all enclosed public spaces and workplaces in England from 1 July. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have already imposed similar bans.

Dr Alex Bobak, chairman of the Smoking Cessation in Primary Care group, said people who wanted to quit smoking should be talked through all the therapy options.

‘I don’t think GPs are necessarily the people to do all those discussions,’ he said. ‘In an ideal world, patients should see a stop-smoking adviser for support.’

However, GPs should be on hand to make prescribing treat-ments ‘as easy as possible’, added Dr Bobak.

The final technology appraisal document on varenicline is due to be issued in July.
